Bio
Our History
The Invicta Jazz Orchestra have their origins in the 1990s as one of the musical groups within Kent Music School, and included a young Scott Jenkins, later to become our Musical Director, on the saxophone. Scott took over the running of the band, still as part of Kent Music School (KMS), in 2002. They continued to rehearse during term times at the music school’s Astley House headquarters until 2012.
In 2012, the future of the Astley House venue was in doubt, but the band was offered the opportunity to rehearse at Sutton Valence School. At the same time, the members of the band voted to break away from KMS and become an independent organisation.
Under the musical directorship of Scott Jenkins, and more recently with Richard Blake as our deputy musical director, the Invicta Jazz Orchestra has gone from strength to strength and performs regularly around Kent throughout the year. They have also performed at the Marlborough Jazz Festival and been on tours to France and the Netherlands.
Our Musical Director
The Invicta Jazz Orchestra’s director of music, Scott Jenkins, is a founding member of the band. Scott spent 3 years at Middlesex University Studying a BA in Music (Jazz) and years of teaching. He served several years with the Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra and his work with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra led him down the funk and fusion line. He tours professionally with soul band “Loose Change” and has done various gigs with the world-renowned leading Jive Band, the “Jive Aces”. When he isn’t selling saxophones, advising sax players or doing sax repairs, Scott has other projects on the go: The Ella and Peggy Tribute Band with Amy Baker, and the fusion world music band Quantum Collective.
